Ghana has seen a significant increase in wealth over the past decade, with many of its inhabitants seeking pleasures of the western lifestyle. Accra’s beachfront has a potential to become a destination for the up-and-coming young connoisseurs of beach clubs. Labadi Beach Hotel, with its colonial style architecture, is the neighbor to Labadi Beach Club, which aims to become the leading VIP beach club in the city.

The project is imagined as a series of programs that unfold in front of the guests as they arrive at the club’s VIP parking lot. Like a swiss knife, the programs are divided into zig-zag themed areas which unfold from the parking lot towards the sea, allowing for the restaurant, kitchen and the main bar to remain at the elevated area, whilst the pool and the lounging programs get closer to the sea. Such programmatic zoning ensures that the most expensive programs remain safe in case of a flood.

The zig-zag layering of the program enables us to create a series of in-between landscape zones with different themes, which complement the lounge themes. As such, there is a forest private fête at the back of the restaurant, allowing for exclusive group dining; hammock and puff seating is next to the disco lounge; the hanging chairs are next to the group lounge area; the beach bar is next to the pool; the beach armchair lounge is next to the individual lounge, spilling into the beach stools.

The X layout of the restaurant, created by the zig-zag layering, is fully optimized: on the main level is the main bar with the DJ booth, the back-kitchen, the toilets and the spiral staircase which leads to the upper restaurant deck with the views of the sea, as well as the two balconies for casual outdoor drinks. Beneath the main level is the waterproof storage for all the lounging equipment, ensuring the privacy and floor protection of the majority of the club’s properties.
